about

This is a special release of my debut full live set at Club Passim last fall.

Sign up on the mailing list at www.gilliangrogan.com to hear about it!

2017 has been a busy year of hard work and reflection, of learning and redesigning. From here, I begin a journey of deep<er> sonic and multi-media expression and celebration. Looking forward to sharing that with y'all.

Track Name: Mindful Matter, Silent Sounds
in the midst of every color,
every sound
to be so still
it takes a lot
you’ve got time to kill
you’ve got years of your life
you’ve got everything you could want
you’ve got time, my dear,
you’ve got years for fun

in the face of every message,
every post up on that wall
it takes a lot
close your eyes and ears
to those who’ve lost heart and
remember the child from the start
look inside, my dear, ‘till you reach
the heart

don’t bother whining how the
grass’s been growing greener over there
just take a walk
if you leave today,
get up and roam away
you can have the say that you want
though it’s hard to say goodbye,
to those who you love
it ain’t forever
it’s just for so long, my child,
your story’s just begun

somehow from the middle of this crowd
i find the world’s just not so loud
it’s not so loud
silent sounds,
as opposed to ornery vocals
from ornerier locals, abound
though the cities screech
with fancy machines
and other means to bring them sleep
by the end of the week,
and i’m not weak for thinking
i’m not weak for slowing down
just to hear the silence of the sound
Track Name: Groundhog Day (The Lovers)
in the morning, she asks him his name
and he couldn't believe, what she done became
but he do believe, tomorrow'll be the same

in the middle of the day
the sun sat on high, and she drifted away
he asked himself how, how could it be okay

la dee da.........

in the afternoon, he prayed, and
when she called his name, his tears fell all the same
couldn't bear to leave, couldn't bear to stay

in the evening, she slipped away
just as fast as she came, and he warn't surprised
he always knew, she'd leave him each day

la dee da..............

as he awoke, just before the sun tore through the
old lovers' yellow screen door
heavy, still,
rowdy as a stone

he rolled over, but something was wrong
she asked him no questions and made not a sound
was almost as though she were gone

la dee da................

in the morning, he asks her his name
oh my sweet Bill, am I to blame?
with quivering lips, and lines across her face

oh my dear Dee, I'd ask you to stay,
and I know it ain't kind for me to leave you this a'way,
but I've fallen ill,
'n my time's hard to say

la dee da.................

as the sun poured in the through the holes in the walls
our Billy knows that his love's moved along
daren't stir the sheets
daren't wake her now

in the morning, she asks him his name
there's fear in her eyes, and
he's scramblin' to explain
everyday
every day the same
Track Name: Redbird
feathers of the redbird
so the story goes
a little one with hope
yeah, a little one with hope

where has the fence gone, you used to sit on
do you sense the ghost of the phantom wall?
redbird, redbird, mm
ain't no wood, 'n there ain't no saw

redbird on the wall
fire on them all
redbird

what brings you to this lonesome place
doesn't it break your heart?
don't it wet your face?
redbird, redbird, mm
ain't no fence worth leaning on

redbird on the wall
fire on them all
redbird

what cloud surrounds?
what snuffed your song?
what melody is swallowed, strangled and repudiated?
redbird, mmm
carry on, your song ain't gone

redbird, oh, remember
sister, burn redder!
redbird

redbird on the wall
fire on them all
redbird

feathers of the redbird
so that story goes
a little one with hope
yeah, a little one with hope
Track Name: The Sweetest Song
the summer's end hath born
the fable of two lovers, torn
both with every open door
laughing at their luck on the forest floor
laughing at their luck on the forest floor

...

we watched the sun come up,
slept on our backs and snuggled up,
but I wouldn't say I fell in love,
wouldn't say I fell in love

that blade of grass should know--
it lay below while we bared our souls,
and it watched me, as I let you go,
watched me, as I let you go

...

the lightning storm approached,
got trapped behind the hill, and it did moan,
and it cracked the sky and shook the stone!
you sang the sweetest song, and it struck my bones
yeah you sang your pretty song, and it struck my bones

now in the hours next--
surely ain't many words could express--
but the sight of your bruised and bloody knees
coupled with my hair like a nest for the bees

...
Track Name: Lo, The Feeling
turn down the lights, let the night in
forty-six eyes and one ceiling
they've come for the whiskey and music
so turn down the lights, lo the feeling!

nate, toss the pillows there for seating!
jessica, check up on the kitchen!
then pass 'round the flask, oh that common catalyst,
and turn down the lights, lo the feeling!

turn down the lights, let the night in
twenty-three hearts keep beating
they've come for the whiskey and music
so turn down the lights, lo the feeling!
Track Name: Homecoming
I've been to many places down them highways since leaving Cambridge,
and I've seen so many faces around towns outside from where I started.
Now I'm coming home.
Now I'm coming home.

Well I played a couple gatherings underground between my two favorite oceans, and I leveled with the clattering city sounds,
bellowed for to breathe my toughness.
Now I'm coming home.
Now I'm coming home.

I traveled many states,
but the state of mind ain't been revealed--
I marked it on the map,
but the map disappeared!
Tryin' to get the dirt of something simple in my tires--
gonna drive until the sun sets,
and the last coffee's got me wired...
Now I'm coming home.

I visited a few folks I know'd there 'fore they left to a new life.
It was then that I knew there war no place like home,
where home is the bloodline.
Where home is the people
who dance under the steeple
they carved out like Pooh in the heart of a trunk,
where the trunk is the hearth of our sequel,
that never-ending tale unequal,
whittling away at the same brigade,
slapping back the songs of our builders,
slapping back the songs of our builders, yeah.

Now I'm heading home where the wild things roam,
but the wild things ain't good natured, no.
Into the darkness, I will stroll,
where the sun can't drown your laser, oh,
but if melody was a cure, I swear,
I'd meet you there like your savior there
but this malady ain't going nowhere fast--
oh, Erebus, hear our prayer!

Now I'm coming home.....
Now I'm coming home.
Track Name: Home For Supper
Through the short and hardy forest,
brittle December pine,
we're losing time,
we're losing time.

No we daren't forget our mother,
fixing supper by the stove,
praying for we come home,
praying for we come home.

Oh the wind has grown thicker,
and our sight has grown slim.
Oh I hold onto my brother,
that I see him again.

Oh in the pitch pine forest,
my brother and I,
we're losing time,
we're losing time.

Oh the white snow a'falling,
a whistling winter waltz.
She's playing our song,
she's playing our song.

War every shivering needle ring,
like a bell, our song would sing.
Like a bell, our song would sing,
war every shivering needle ring.

Oh the harping of the eider,
unmistakablly sweet.
Oh the humming of our mother,
we are far late to see.

Oh in the pitch pine forest,
my brother and I,
we're losing time,
we're losing time.
Track Name: C'mon Ol' Friend
c'mon, sweet willy, won’t you walk on down my road?

i got places to see, and i don’t want to see ‘em alone.

well c'mon, lord henry, won’t you read this book by me?

we got lessons to learn far beyond what the eye can see.

c'mon, loretta, won’t you break this bread i baked?

‘cause the seasons done changed, and all my friends done moved away.

c'mon, old friend, won’t you lead me by the hand?

‘cause i’m open of mind, and i’m loose, i’m loose, oh, of the plan.
Track Name: Silver Lake
rain’s been coming down for hours
smoke and fire spinning shadows
heads hiked in with dread and doubt
none of that remains with us now
aloft this bow

pass the bottle until you don’t
roasting apples until they won’t
pitch a sail, and we’ll fly away
off this mountain into the lake
into the lake

we saw silver and gold
we felt slivers of hope

miles above the grind
stories overhead you’ll find
stones upon stones up from there
the height to which we gladly climb
we’ll climb

less is more among the leaves
so leave your things below the breeze
air smells different off the ground
passing through, a phantom sound
and we are neither lost nor found

we lay in peace, our souls well fed
while the wind shakes our bones like a water bed

blessed by the freedom of the Greens
we wear our stories on our sleeves
but you are the leaf that left the leaves
and if in one place you must be,
better to be of the trees
plucked from the branch, you float
swept by the dance that somewhere’s blowing

we saw silver and gold
we felt slivers of hope
